Duration of the trip

The duration of the trip indicates the estimated walking time from the starting point of the trip to the destination and back. Unlike hiking portals, which usually only list the ascent time, this one also includes the return time. The time of arrival to the starting point of the trip is not included.

The estimate is based on a medium-fast walk, and the shortest possible duration is most often stated. Depending on your pace and the chosen route, significant deviations are possible.

If the trip requires the use of a boat, the duration also includes the time spent on it, counting from the starting point of the trip.

Trip categories

Trips are divided into three categories:

  • Hiking – involves climbing and is usually more demanding than walking.
  • Waterside trip – takes place along rivers, streams, lakes or the sea, either partially or completely.
  • Walking – takes place on more well-maintained trails, without major climbs, and is less strenuous than hiking.

These categories are based on subjective assessment, depending on what is prevalent on the route. Many hikes combine elements of all three categories.

Trip Difficulty

Hikes are divided into five categories based on the difficulty of the trail:

  • Easy – most people can easily complete the trail.
  • More difficult – most people can complete the trail, but some parts may be more challenging.
  • Medium – some sections may be challenging for some people.
  • Very difficult – demanding, recommended for experienced hikers.
  • Extremely difficult – extremely challenging, only for those with a high level of fitness and experience.

The categorization is subjective and is based on the difficulty of completing individual sections of the trail. The length of the trail and the duration of the hike are not taken into account when determining the difficulty.

The difficulty of the hike depends largely on your physical fitness and experience.

Rating

The rating is a subjective assessment of the beauty of the trip. It ranges from 1 (worst impression) to 5 (excellent impression) and is based on the average of user ratings.

In some cases, extremely low ratings may be manually removed if they deviate significantly from the norm. Initial ratings are a combination of my subjective impressions and ratings found on the internet.

Mythical creatures

General

Mythical creatures on this page are listed based on written sources, which are clearly stated. Their connection to a specific location is also based on written records - whether the place is directly mentioned in the legend, or the narrator is from that area.

Categories

On the Mythical Creatures page, terms are divided into the following categories:

  • Supernatural Beings - beings with powers that are not in accordance with generally accepted natural laws.
  • Slavic Mythology - gods, demigods and other beings from Old Slavic mythology.
  • Croatian legends - stories and legends that are not directly related to the supernatural beings from the first category.
  • Mythical Places - locations associated with frequent occurrences of supernatural or mythical beings and significant legends.

The categories are used solely to facilitate browsing the page. Their division can be a subject of debate, as the categorization of the supernatural always leaves room for different interpretations.

Danger

Supernatural beings are classified into the following categories according to their alleged danger:

  • Probably harmless – beings for which there are no stories of them ever harming people. However, given their supernatural nature, complete safety is not guaranteed.
  • Potentially dangerous – some beings are considered good in some regions, and extremely dangerous in others. Unless explicitly stated that they are harmless, any supernatural being can be potentially dangerous.
  • Dangerous – beings that can harm people.
  • Very dangerous – beings that pose a serious and great danger.
  • Unknown – beings whose nature is insufficiently researched.

Alternative names

Beings are listed under the most common name under which they appear. The alternative names section lists other names under which the being appears in different parts of Croatia. The classification itself is very dubious because even the legends about a being with the same name vary greatly depending on the region.
